By train (recommended)
Tohoku Shinkansen, from about 90 minutes. The JR Pass and JR East passes that cover the Tohoku area include this route; check your pass conditions.
About 40-47 minutes by train from JR Sendai Station (JR Senseki Line or Senseki-Tohoku Line to Takagimachi, then an 8-minute walk). Use the JR Senseki Line platforms (underground) at Sendai Station.
8 minutes on foot. There is a taxi stand at the station if you have heavy bags.
Matsushima Station and Matsushima-Kaigan Station are different stations.
Matsushima Station is on the JR Tohoku Line, an 18-minute walk from the house. Matsushima-Kaigan is on the Senseki Line and is where the sights are. Your stop is Takagimachi (高城町), one stop past Matsushima-Kaigan.
We can't hold luggage before check-in or after check-out. Use coin lockers at the stations.
By car
About 35 minutes by car from Sendai Station. About 50 minutes by car or 1 hour 20 minutes by train from Sendai Airport.
Free parking on site for 3 cars, parked one behind another. No reservation needed. Please don't park in front of neighbors' houses. To drive in Japan you need an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) or an official Japanese translation of your license, depending on your country.
By taxi
There's a taxi stand at Takagimachi Station. You can also use the DiDi or Motaku apps, or call Daiichi Koutsu (Matsushima): 022-354-3122 (24 hours, no pick-up fee, cards accepted). Dispatchers may only speak Japanese.
